Pet Surrender
Montgomery County Animal Care and Control will accept owner surrendered pets by APPOINTMENT ONLY as space allows. To ensure our current population remains healthy, as well as having adequate space and staff to care for the animals in the shelter, our appointments are based on the number of animals entering our shelter each day, both stray animals and owner surrenders, and our ability to properly care for those animals.
Before surrendering your pet, please read all of our information provided below.
If you still need to surrender your pet, please complete the Pet Behavior Assessment Form below. Please call the shelter at 931-648-5750 to speak with our intake coordinator to schedule an appointment. Please note, each surrender will be reviewed on a case by case scenario. Please do not come to the shelter with your pet without an appointment. Staff will require you to make an appointment as our schedule allows and return on that date with your pet.
Before you Surrender a Pet
Surrendering your pet is a tremendously stressful time not only for the family but for the pet most of all. When a pet arrives at the shelter it has no idea why it is there and it becomes very stressful for the animal. We do understand that situations arise and families are left with little to no other options for finding a new home for their pet. We do ask pet owners who may need to surrender their pet to please try to exhaust all other options in trying to rehome, locate a rescue, or find a temporary home for your pet.

Canine and Feline Surrender
When surrendering your canine, contact Montgomery County Animal Care and Control to schedule an appointment. All pet surrenders are scheduled far enough in advance to ensure we have adequate space, personnel and other resources for those days. At this time our surrenders are scheduled 4-6 weeks out due to our current shelter population and incoming stray animals. Please plan accordingly knowing this time frame.
When surrender a dog, please make sure the dog is on a suitable leash and collar and you have all veterinary/medical paperwork, proof of ownership, and any other pertinent information necessary to ensure our staff can establish you as the owner and the health history of your pet.
If surrendering a cat, please make sure it is in a cat carrier when you come to the shelter.
To save time, please complete the online behavior assessment form. It will save valuable time when you arrive at the shelter. We also ask that you bring any toys, bedding, or other items your pet is familiar with to make their stay less stressful.
