Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is MCACC a no-kill shelter?
MCACC is an open-intake municipal shelter, which means we must accept all animals from Montgomery County residents. While we work hard to adopt, reunite, and transfer every animal, euthanasia may occur when animals are severely ill, aggressive, or when space is critically limited. We partner with rescues, fosters, and adopters to reduce euthanasia as much as possible.

How long are animals held?

  • Strays: By Tennessee law, animals without identification are held for 3 business days; animals with identification (tags/microchips) are held for 5 business days. After this period, animals may be placed for adoption, rescue transfer, or foster care based on health and behavior.
  • Stray intake window: If you find a stray, it must be turned over to MCACC within 24 hours. Keeping found pets longer can prevent owners from reclaiming them.
  • Owner surrenders: Evaluated for adoption or transfer immediately upon intake.

Can I bring in a stray animal I found?
Yes, as long as it was found in Montgomery County. Animals should always go to the shelter in which they were found, so owners know where to look.

What is the process for a welfare check on a dog or other animal?

If you see an animal left without shelter, water, or in unsafe conditions, please call MCACC at 931-648-5750 during business hours. After hours, please call our after-hours line at 931-249-1304. Our officers will respond or coordinate with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office or Clarksville Police Department if needed.

What happens if I see a deceased animal on the road?

  • Roadkill/Removal: For wildlife The Montgomery County Street Department or City Street Department is responsible for removing deceased animals from roadways.
  • MCACC Role: When possible, and as a courtesy, MCACC will scan deceased pets for microchips to notify owners and provide closure.

What is the process to surrender a pet?
Owner surrenders are by appointment only. Please call us at 931-648-5750 to schedule. We will discuss your situation, required paperwork, and any fees. For more on our surrender process and fees, please visit: https://montgomerytn.gov/animal-control/surrendering-your-pet

What are the adoption fees?

Yes, group visits are possible with advance notice. Please call to coordinate with staff.

Do you offer microchipping?

Do you take small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs?
Yes, depending on space. We occasionally have rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets available for adoption.

Do you provide donated pet food or supplies to the public?
