History

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program is a voluntary environmental recognition program administered by Montgomery County Government that helps organizations integrate sustainable business practices into their daily operations. Participants complete a comprehensive assessment covering energy conservation, water stewardship, waste reduction and recycling, pollution prevention, transportation/fleet management, landscaping, purchasing, and community engagement. Organizations that meet established sustainability benchmarks are recognized at the Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level.

Originally launched in 2011, based on a Leadership Clarksville study conducted in 2010 based on successful environmental initiatives from ISO 14001 and Environmental Management Systems. The program was reintroduced in 2025 under the leadership of Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden and the support of Bi-County Solid Waste Management as part of the County's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable economic development. Today, the program works on bringing businesses, industries, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies together to reduce environmental impact, improve operational efficiency, and serve as community leaders in sustainability.

Program Details

The Green Certification Program is open to any organization with a physical location in Montgomery County with at least three employees. There is no cost to join the Program or to become Certified. Participants are asked to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and are recognized for existing and new sustainable practices.

The Program works one-on-one with each business to help reduce waste and improve efficiency. Additionally, we offer networking and mentoring through the Program. Each year, the certified organizations are recognized for their achievements. After becoming certified, organizations must recertify every two years to stay active in the Program.
