Montgomery County Opioid Settlement Information

According to data from the University of Tennessee's SMART Initiative, an agency of the Institute for Public Service, opioid-related fatal overdoses in Montgomery County have risen significantly over the past decade. The peak occurred in 2021, with a total of 117 deaths—more than two per week. Although there has been a slight decline in overdose-related fatalities since 2023, the epidemic of these illicit and highly dangerous substances continues to evolve and threaten public safety. , opioid-related fatal overdoses in Montgomery County have risen significantly over the past decade. In response to this ongoing crisis, Montgomery County, along with other Tennessee counties, has received settlement payments from national lawsuits targeting opioid manufacturers, commercial retailers, their respective public relations partners, and other affiliates. These funds, in turn, are expected to be invested into programs, projects, and efforts to curb the ongoing effects of the opioid crisis. 

Montgomery County’s use of settlement funds must support opioid abatement activities outlined in the state’s approved Remediation Guidelines. Funded projects must 1) align with an OAC-approved abatement activity and 2) not replace existing funding (“supplantation”).

Upcoming Public Application Opportunity 

In Fall 2026, Montgomery County will open its first public opioid funding application cycle for 501(c)(3) nonprofits operating within the county. Proposed projects must align with approved remediation uses to be eligible for funding. Please continue monitoring this page for updates, including key dates and application materials.
