The Montgomery County Assessor of Property Office is pleased to announce that Chief Deputy Derek Flanigan, RES/TMA, has been elected Vice President of the Tennessee Chapter of the International Association of Assessing Officers (TIAAO).
Flanigan has been with the Montgomery County Assessor of Property Office since 2012 and currently serves as Chief Deputy Assessor. During his tenure, he has played a key role in the office’s operations, technology implementation, professional development, and commitment to accurate and equitable property assessment.
A strong advocate for continuing education, Flanigan holds the Residential Evaluation Specialist (RES) designation from the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). RES is a professional designation recognizing demonstrated knowledge and competency in the valuation of residential property. To earn the designation, candidates must meet experience requirements, complete extensive appraisal and assessment education, pass examinations, and display proficiency in residential property valuation.
Flanigan has also helped make that level of professional achievement a priority within the Montgomery County Assessor’s Office. Under his leadership and mentorship, five Montgomery County appraisers have earned the IAAO RES designation, strengthening the office's technical expertise and expanding the number of nationally credentialed appraisal professionals serving Montgomery County taxpayers.
In addition to his work in Montgomery County, Flanigan has been active in the Tennessee assessors’ professional community. He has served on the Technology Committee and CAMA Administrators Committee of the Tennessee Assessors Association, and has contributed to professional education and collaboration among assessment professionals across the state.
Todd Orr, Assessor of Property for Blount County and Past President of TIAAO, praised Flanigan’s election and the experience he brings to the organization.
“I believe Derek will be a great addition to the TIAAO leadership. Having spent over a decade in public service, his expertise will be a welcome addition to our organization. He will make continuing education a top priority. With the RES designation, he understands the importance of education.
“I’m truly excited to see the direction his leadership will bring to our organization. As the previous President of TIAAO, I’m always excited to see longtime members choose to step up, serve, and share their passion and expertise with fellow members. I know he will do great things in this role.”
Flanigan’s election continues Montgomery County’s work to advance the property assessment profession at both the state and national levels. TIAAO provides education, professional development, and collaboration for Tennessee assessment professionals and is affiliated with the International Association of Assessing Officers.
