The Montgomery County Courts Center was assigned with a new name this morning to honor former Montgomery County Mayor Doug Weiland. The signage unveiling ceremony took place at 10 a.m. revealing the official name as Doug Weiland Courts Center.

Family, friends, former co-workers and associates gathered at the Third Street corner of the Courts Center nearest to the Historic Courthouse to share in the naming tribute of the former County Mayor.

"Mayor Weiland served as County Mayor for 10 years when tough decisions like the building of this Courts Center, had to be made. I believe it is important to show respect and honor to those who worked to build-up our community and we are here to do just that this morning,” stated Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett.

“I am honored to be here this morning. Often, these types of ceremonies take place after the person is no longer with us. I’m grateful to be here with my wife, Mary, family and friends to celebrate this moment,” said Weiland.

Weiland served as Mayor of Montgomery County from 1997 to 2006. During his tenure, he led the efforts to rebuild the Historic Courthouse as well as the construction of the Courts Center, located at 2 Millennium Plaza. Since the Courts Center was completed in 2002, two new courtrooms and supporting new offices have been added. There is space left for two additional courtrooms and offices.

“When we built the County Courts Center, we built it not for only for that present time but also with the future in mind, providing room for growth. I’m proud of that,” Weiland added.

Downtown Commons welcomes Tater Headz as the next indoor food vendor on the corner of Legion and Third streets. Opening August 16, Tater Headz will provide the downtown community a place to connect over lunch serving loaded baked potatoes, loaded mac and cheese, sandwiches, and salads with various toppings. Tater Headz will also be open for all the Downtown Commons events outside of lunch hours.

“It’s nice to welcome a new vendor to the Downtown Commons space. We have so many great food options all over the county. Tater Headz will soon be a part of the downtown Clarksville list of eateries.” said Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett.

“We are excited about expanding our business into the Downtown Commons vendor space. It’s another fantastic way to connect with people in the community. We look forward to serving food to people in the downtown area,” said Tater Headz co-owner Natalie Davis.

Tater Headz, voted ‘Best of the Best Food Truck in Clarksville for 2021’ VIP Clarksville Magazine, has been serving the local community a great bite to eat for over a year. They are regularly scheduled at Dinner with the Trucks, Clarksville Downtown Market, Downtown @ Sundown, and in local neighborhoods.

Downtown Commons will host the next Movie Night this Saturday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m. The movies are free and open to the public. This month’s feature is Coco, a movie about a boy named Miguel who sets off an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind his family history.

During the movie kids will have the opportunity to make crafts at ArtLink’s mobile studio and Driving You Donuts will be available on Main Street. Tennessee Kettle Corn will also be there with popcorn available for everyone!

Chairs and blankets are welcome; however, pets, coolers, smoking/vaping or outside alcohol will not be allowed on site.

The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners will act to fill the vacant seat of District 18 at the formal county commission meeting on Monday, September 13, at 6 p.m. The seat is vacant due to the resignation of Commissioner Jason Knight on July 23, 2021. The meeting will be held in the commission chambers on the third floor of the County Historic Courthouse located at 1 Millennium Plaza, Clarksville, Tennessee.

Interested candidates must meet the following minimum requirements according to Tennessee Code: (1) must be at least 18 years of age; and (2) a resident within and a qualified voter of the district they represent.

Interested candidates may submit a letter of interest, a resume and a copy of their current voter registration card to the Montgomery County Human Resources Department, 1 Millennium Plaza, Suite 111, Clarksville, TN 37040, by August 27, 2021, to be duplicated and distributed to the Montgomery County Commission prior to the formal meeting scheduled on September 13. Information received after August 27 will be duplicated and presented to the commission at the September 13, 2021 formal commission meeting.

Qualified candidates will be given five minutes to speak before the county commission at the formal meeting. Voting will take place after the candidates speak.

The Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department has closed the Wade Bourne Nature Center due to a failure with the HVAC system. The decision was made this afternoon after Director of Parks and Recreation Jerry Allbert received notification that the system could be out of service for up to seven days.

“The temperatures are just too high for us to keep the Nature Center open to the public. However, all other outside areas of Rotary Park, such as the trails, playground, pavilions, horseshoe pits, and disc golf, are open. We appreciate the community’s patience and will open the Nature Center as soon as we can,” said Allbert.

The Wade Bourne Nature Center offers an interactive area for kids and adults to learn about the wildlife indigenous to Montgomery County as well as information about the legacy of nationally recognized journalist and conservationist, Wade Bourne.
